Passing Merchants (WIP)

The documentary portrait series, Passing Merchants, sheds light on the plight of small businesses in Shanghai that are facing extinction due to rapid urbanization. The demolition of old streets and escalating rental costs in newer areas have compelled these small businesses to either close down or relocate. Consequently, even local residents are forced to move away from the city center. Despite their significant contributions to the city's prosperity, these small business owners are being overlooked. They have played a crucial role in fostering economic growth and building a sense of community. Upon closer inspection of the communities threatened by demolition or already destroyed, one discovers their remarkable vitality. Neighbors coexist harmoniously, and the community itself fulfills many essential needs. While urbanization has undeniably lifted people out of poverty and improved living conditions, it has failed to preserve the cultural heritage and the communal fabric that are integral to our civilization.

Zhang, the series' creator, explores potential subjects by scouting areas rumored to be demolished soon, often without carrying any equipment. Once he identifies a potential subject, he engages them in regular conversation. People generally approach being photographed with caution and sensitivity. Only after establishing a comfortable rapport with his subjects does Zhang share his proposal with them.

This series is envisioned as a long-term project, aiming to capture and document the stories of these passing merchants over an extended period.
